Getting ready for your trip to Australia
Australia can offer a memorable travel experience, but good preparation makes it easier to focus on enjoying your journey. Start by deciding what you want to see, how long you plan to stay and what type of trip best suits your plans.
If you are travelling from the UK, allow enough time to organise your passport, accommodation, transportation, travel insurance and any visa or entry requirements that apply to you.
Getting to Australia
Your transport options will depend on your departure point, budget and travel dates. Compare available flights and other transport options before booking so that you can choose an itinerary that fits your plans.
When arranging your journey, consider baggage allowances, connection times, airport transfers and the location of your accommodation.
Getting around Australia
Think about how you will travel between the places you want to visit. Depending on your destination, public transport, trains, buses, taxis, rental vehicles or organised tours may all be useful options.
Planning your main routes in advance can help you understand how much time you will need each day and avoid unnecessary travel between destinations.
Where to stay in Australia
Choose accommodation based on your itinerary rather than price alone. Location, transport links, cancellation conditions and access to the places you want to visit can all make a significant difference.
Keep your accommodation confirmations available with your other travel documents, particularly if they may be needed as part of your visa or entry preparation.
Popular places to explore
Build your itinerary around the experiences that matter most to you. Research the main attractions, neighbourhoods, cultural sites, natural areas and activities available in Australia.
Avoid trying to fit too much into a single day. Leaving some flexibility in your itinerary gives you more time to enjoy each destination.
Travel planning tips
- Check your passport validity before making travel arrangements.
- Keep copies of important travel documents in a secure location.
- Confirm your accommodation and main transportation arrangements.
- Review your travel insurance before departure.
- Check the latest entry and visa requirements for your destination.
- Allow extra time for airport, border and transport procedures.
Visa and entry requirements
Travel requirements can depend on your nationality, UK immigration status, destination and purpose of travel. Before travelling, check the current official entry requirements for your circumstances.
If you need a visa, make sure you understand the relevant application process, supporting documents and appointment requirements before making non-refundable travel arrangements.
Always check the latest official requirements
Visa and entry rules can change. Use official government or embassy information for the latest requirements that apply to you.
